Original post: People just don't get killed in Southlake. Police there last recorded a murder in 1999 and have seen two in the past 20 years. The Dallas Morning News gives the town a perfect 5.0 in its ranking of the area's safest neighborhoods. At least, they didn't until Wednesday evening, when a 43-year-old was gunned down in his Range Rover parked outside Victoria's Secret. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, a man, possibly wearing a mask, fired five or six shots from the passenger seat of a white SUV at about 6:45 p.m. The 43-year-old's wife, who was driving the Range Rover, wasn't hurt. The man hasn't yet been identified.
Shoppers were, predictably, shocked by the shooting.
"I'm very surprised, very shocked," one shopper, Rachel Fowle, told NBC 5. "It's very unsettling it would happen in the middle of the day in such a populated area."
"This is freakin' in our own backyard," another, Jacob Gullion, told the Morning News.
Southlake Police Chief Stephen Mylett told reporters that the incident has the hallmarks of a targeted killing. It's certainly nothing like either of Southlake's two most recent murders, which are recounted by the Star-Telegram:
In the earlier Southlake homicides, Dr. Scott C. Stone Jr. flew to Southlake in 1999 from North Carolina and ambushed his ex-wife, also a physician, while she was jogging. He then killed himself.In 1994, Terence O'Regan stabbed his estranged wife because he was afraid that she would reveal his "penchant for cross-dressing," according to a Star-Telegram report. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
