If you're staying at one of the six area Candlewood Suites extended-stay hotels in coming weeks and find yourself with time on your hands, here's an intriguing option that doesn't include asking for the nearest mall, restaurant or movie theater. Starting last weekend, some 100 Candlewood Suites employees and guests began building a house at 2707 Valentine in the beleagured Bon Ton area of South Dallas, not far from Fair Park, for Marie Williams Dean and her mother and brother. It's a Habitat for Humanity project, and they expect to have it done some time in mid-September. Candlewood Suites, which is owned by the InterContinental Hotels Group (Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza), is going to build 10 houses across the country, but this is the first. Guess Candlewood saw in South Dallas what city officials too often don't, which is an opportunity to make things a little better, even if it's one house at a time. --Robert Wilonsky
