Six journalists representing national Afrocentric publications, among then Sister 2 Sister and Black America Today, are being feted in Dallas this week. (Why, I am not sure: The Black America Today's Web site doesn't seem to be particularly up to date, given that its most recent news story is about the death of Rosa Parks last, uh, October?) Anyway, they're getting the top treatment from the mayor and city officials, who are showing them Cosmo Rouge in the Bishop Arts District, Abacus in Knox-Henderson, the African American Museum and Dallas Museum of Art, Neiman Marcus' downtown "mothership" (as the city's press release puts it) and the grand opening of the new wing at NorthPark Center. They'll also get to hang out with Erykah Badu and T.D. Jakes and some folks from the Dallas Mavericks, and there's a reception with the mayor this evening at the Westin Park Central, where the Dallas Black Dance Theater will perform. And just what brings them here? So says the city: "Yes, we know that Atlanta, D.C. and Chicago have a great reputation for attracting the young, black, hip and fabulous, but Dallas is slowly gaining notoriety for the same vibe." Right on. --Robert Wilonsky
