Children were bused to the San Angelo Coliseum with their mothers after the April 3 raid.

This morning's Deseret News has added up the numbers and come up with the figure: $12.4 million. That's what the April raid on the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado's going to wind up costing Texas taxpayers, at least once you add up the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services' costs for providing shelter for the women and children yanked out of the FLDS compound. But that's just a tip of the fiscal iceberg, as that number's lacking a lot of other numbers, including attorney's fees. And Dallas lawyer Susan Hays, quoted in several of Jesse Hyde's stories about the raid (including his October cover story), sounds like she'd like a little more than a state judge's hourly billing cap of $4,000 and travel cap of $750. Attorneys' fees should add at least another $2 million to the total bill. --Robert Wilonsky
