That Zac Crain is one busy dude -- running for mayor (well...), editing a magazine, writing a book. Wait .. you didn't know the last part? Yeah -- it's a bio of the late "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott titled Black Tooth Grin: The High Life, Good Times, and Tragic End of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, due in November from DeCapo Press.
Only, here's the weird part. We just got an e-mail, from Abbott family publicist Jane Hoffman (she also works with Vinnie Paul Abbott's Hellyeah), warning us that this book is a fraud, a phony -- a sham, I tellya!
Then there was the link to this single story Zac wrote seven years ago, in which he said a few unkind things about 1996's The Great Southern Trendkill ("The Cowboys from Hell should stick to running low-class strip joints instead of trying to record albums that would be played in them"). Hoffman forgot to include this story, which I rather liked. Either way, the PR machine's churning early for this one; Mr. Crain couldn't have asked for more. --Robert WilonskyThe family of the late Dimebag Darrell Abbott has not authorized nor cooperated with Zac Crain on his upcoming book on Dimebag, scheduled for release on Perseus Books in November of 2007. In addition, Mr. Crain did not know Dimebag personally.
Mr. Crain's request to the family was denied. Among other reasons, during his tenure as music editor of the Dallas Observer, Mr. Crain wrote nothing but negative reviews about Pantera's music.
