Some folks are tickled by Aldi's impending arrival; others wait for H-E-B; still more clamor for a Trader Joe's. But in North Oak Cliff, the opening of a Save-A-Lot on March 4 is big news -- so much so that when the company sent out its press release this morning announcing the new location opening at 2627 W. Jefferson Boulevard, which appears to be the site of a former Carnival, it included a quote from Mayor Tom Leppert. As you may recall, last June the mayor sprinted down a Save-a-Lot aisle with Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway to grand-open an outpost on S. Lancaster Road. Says Leppert this time 'round:
"Save-A-Lot has been a member of the Dallas community for years and clearly saw a great business opportunity. Families here wanted quality, affordable food and Save-A-Lot stepped in to fill the demand. We are thrilled about their local expansion into North Oak Cliff and look forward to working with them for years to come."The release promises yet another promising photo op: "To mark the grand opening, the Mayor as well as Councilwoman Jasso will race through the aisles of the new store with help from local children from Mi Escuelita Preschool, as part of their Dollar Cutting Ceremony!" It's for a good cause, though, with groceries collected and a check for five thou going toward feeding hungry Oak Cliff families.
