Louie Gohmert Makes Fox Business Sorry They Let Him on the Air

There aren't many things, or people, capable of making Fox Business Network apologize. The network is happy to let its on-air personalities and guests shill for conspiracies about the migrant caravan, Benghazi or Robert Mueller's witch hunt. Thursday morning, however, the Observer's favorite Republican, East Texas U.S. House Rep. Louie Gohmert, went too far, even for President Donald Trump's state television network. The problem arose in a Fox Business segment that was ostensibly supposed to be about Google and its business dealings in China.

During their conversation, Gohmert and Fox host Stuart Varney began talking about 1984's Big Brother, which somehow led Gohmert to say the following:

“You mention Orwell, it also reminds me of another George — George Soros. Because Google is born in a free country and then they go over and help oppress another country," Gohmert said. "George Soros is supposed to be Jewish, but you wouldn’t know it from the damage he’s inflicted on Israel and the fact that he turned on fellow Jews and helped take the property that they own."
Reading the slightest bit between the lines suggests that Gohmert was talking about the oft-repeated conspiracy theory that Soros, a big donor to Democratic politics, conspired with the Nazis during World War II and the Holocaust. The recent bombing target, of course, did nothing of the sort. He was 9 years old when the war started and 14 when it ended. Varney quickly steered the discussion back to China following Gohmert's assertions, which he did not address immediately. In the next hour of his show, Varney apologized on behalf of the network.

“Congressman Louie Gohmert for some reason went out of his way to bring up George Soros and made unsubstantiated and false allegations against him. I want to make clear those views are not shared by me, this program or anyone at Fox Business," Varney said.
