Each week City of Ate will give you the lowdown on a local happy hour
in Quittin' Time, with the details and why you should or shouldn't take
up the featured bar or restaurant on its drink specials.
Where: Buzzbrews, 4334 Lemmon Ave., 214-521-4334
When: All day Monday, 3 to 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday
What: $1 off all beer and wine drinks.
Why or why not: The place feels more like a coffeeshop, or perhaps an upscale IHOP run by hippies, than a bar. But while the chief draw is food and coffee drinks, the beer and wine selection is surprisingly well thought-out -- and cheap, even before a happy hour discount.
Remember your favorite coffeehouse from college, where you'd hash out your cliched thoughts on whatever you'd discussed that day in Intro to Philosophy with that self-consciously weird friend, the one with all those retro affectations like using a manual typewriter and rolling his own cigarettes? Now imagine that coffeeshop, except with beer, a hearty breakfast menu and without all the cigarette smoke. Paintings on the art-strewn walls inside the well-lit, welcoming space include portraits of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia and other icons of the '60s, a complement to classic rock-leaning background music.
The bar isn't always especially busy, but regardless of crowd size there's a modest but good selection of brews including Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Maredsous 8 and Ska Pinstripe Red Ale, all very reasonably priced. In fact, our can of Old Chub was less than $3 with the happy hour discount. The food isn't quite on a college budget -- the $5 chips and salsa is the only item available for less than $6 -- but there are regular all-day food specials.
