Each week City of Ate will give you the lowdown on a local happy hour
in Quittin' Time, with the details and why you should or shouldn't take
up the featured bar or restaurant on its drink specials.
Where: Club Dada, 2720 Elm St.
When: Starting today, 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, through February
What: Hot Dog Happy Hour with $2 Lone Star and free hot dogs in the back yard
Why: In case you can't tell, we're pretty excited that this Deep Ellum institution is back, under new (and apparently competent) ownership and with a long-needed renovation that moved the bar from its obtrusive central location to the side wall opposite the stage.
We don't mean to step on Happy Eating's toes, but free hot dogs are a pretty fine deal. But we'd be excited even if the $2 Lone Stars were the only draw.
The place is best known as a live-music venue, of course, but the spacious patio out back makes for a fine place to hang out with friends before a show begins (or during the opening band's set, if they turn out to be lousy). And while our experience at the Frankie 45 tribute show was probably no indication of how a normal night at the bar will go, we still think you'll have no trouble getting a nice buzz on without spending too much, even if you miss out on happy hour. Drinks are cheap, and the bartenders had such a heavy hand (at least that night -- perhaps the amps-to-11 wake atmosphere had something to do with it) that we ended up having to take a little car nap before driving home.
If only we'd lined our stomach with some free hot dogs first.
