It's January again, which means it's time for El Ranchito's month-long extravaganza featuring The King of Rock and Roll. The Oak Cliff salsa slinger hosts a number of performances by Elvis impersonators throughout the year, but this month you can get your fill of lamb chops, suede shoes and glistening polyester capes every Wednesday.
El Ranchito was featured in our 50 Most Interesting Restaurants last year, and has received a number of Best of Dallas awards. It's not a bad place to drink a margarita. In fact, I've been working on some serious side burns myself this winter. And since the food critic for New York Magazine Adam Platt recently came out from under the shroud of anonymity, and since I'm tired of not being able to post selfies on Facebook like the rest of you, and because I can think of no better way for a food critic to come out than by crooning "Love Me Tender" while blasted on tequila, I'm giving my own performance some serious thought.
This isn't about me, though; it's about an Oak Cliff staple. The restaurant that normally boasts a mariachi band whose music is so proud and so loud your eardrums throb when you walk out the door is about to get a little weirder and a lot more fun.
Make a reservation. Go. Order the cabrito, a cold cerveza and a shot of tequila. You'll end up with a story you can tell every time someone brings up Elvis impersonation or the art of tribute performance, which admittedly only happens twice a decade but still.
