Last night marked the official opening of the much buzzed about Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar. The upscale Southern comfort food restaurant, located in the old Hector's on Henderson building, boasts a vintage feel from the decor, the china and even the staff, who were dapper in collard shirts, bow ties, dresses and aprons. Only a few people were scattered throughout the restaurant and screened-in patio at 6 p.m. as eager waitstaff lined the dining room. At one point there were 10 servers and busboys on the floor, they outnumbered the patrons by a good handful, but it was still early.
Owner Liza Garza is known for her fried chicken, which appears on the menu alongside chili fried oysters, okra, gumbo, and shrimp and grits. The drink menu offers classics like the Sazerac and Ramos Gin Fizz (Nolets, orange flower water, lemon and half and half), and a variety of liquor-infused punches and teas (which can be ordered by the pitcher).
Sissy's kitchen is open from 5 p.m. until 12 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, which will come in handy after a long right of Henderson Avenue bar-hopping. They're also planning to serve brunch every day, our bartender said, just as soon as they're up and running at a regular pace. And they'll be running -- as we left, customers started to trickle in.
