Dallas is a great place to be right now — the spring weather is supernal and the pillar of Dallas cheeseries has opened its second location in Dallas Farmers Market’s "The Market," a building that is eventually expected to fill with eateries and vendors. Scardello’s now has a small corner-store location inside the still-blossoming downtown food hall.

The Market is Dallas’ first stab at the national food hall trend. Instead of fast-food/mall food-courts, food halls are high-end dining galleries with an array of small restaurant concepts. These improved food courts are perfect for people who lunch with time constraints and for restaurants that use the space to give chefs a chance to experiment.

Scardello’s at The Market will branch out from its Oak Lawn mother ship by concentrating on American- and Texan-made cheeses. A small meat counter with staff-selected ham, salami, prosciutto, pancetta and other such meat things, along with an assortment of olives, allows you to customize your own party tray. If spring fever has you too antsy to make such choices, or you’re ready to start your cheese party immediately, ready-to-go plates are perfect for taking directly outside to the sunny patio that offers a great city view.

While on that patio, enjoy a glass of wine from the tap or really get your juices flowing with one of their selected bottles. If you’re a wine virtuoso with an enviable vintage or just can’t splurge on both cheese and wine simultaneously, they’ll open your own bottle without a corkage fee. And for those who prefer to pair their cheese with beer, there’s also draft Texas beer.

But what makes the new Scardello’s great for lunching or picnic-prepping is their made-to-order sandwiches. They’re all unique to the location and, of course, feature artisanal cheeses. Currently on the menu: The Snitch, made with garlic and black pepper soppressata, award-winning The Stag cheddar, tomato, arugula and spicy mayo. Or try the NBT, the Not a Boring Turkey sandwich, made with smoked turkey breast, local herbed goat cheese, Hungarian goat horn peppers (famous for cheese-pairing) and Marcona almonds on thick ciabatta. The plan is to rotate sandwich offerings throughout the year, and salads are on the way.
