We all have to start somewhere, and the next Rathbun or Pyles may be just a saute away...at El Centro College's Food and Hospitality Institute. Their kitchen may not yet be in a rotating ball, but they're building their basics--and dishing out proof of their knowledge through the college's meal service program.
For example, tomorrow (Feb. 10), they've formed "French" lunch and "California" dinner menus with items like asparagus soup, grilled Mahi-Mahi, pear and Gorgonzola salad, steak au poivre, breads and flambeed figs.
El Centro College's Food and Hospitality Services Institute trains future chefs through classroom instruction, hands-on participation and work-study classes for food service careers like Culinary Arts, Bakery/Pastry, and Food and Hospitality Service.
To experience that training in action book for dinner service on Tuesdays (seating between 5:30 and 6 p.m.). Lunch service is Thursdays, with seating from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Both multi-course meals are $12, and served in the Dining Room, C100, near the Market Street entrance.
Reservations are required and can be made by calling 214-860-2217. Reserve space for the following week starting at 9 a.m. on Fridays, and visit their web site for weekly menus.
