The Red River Rivalry is this Weekend. What's that mean? Well, a lot of bars are going to be packed with people you don't know wearing burnt orange or maroon. And boots.
If you get hungry, head over to Main Street Garden (1920 Main Street) at 5:30 on Friday for the Red River Barbecue Shoot Out. Eight pitmasters, four from each side of the Red River will compete for title of barbecue champion. Check the full line-up here. Bring a lawn chair, admission is free and there will be live music and plenty of food and refreshments.
Perhaps you should just pitch a tent at the Deep Ellum Brewing Company's because they're making a 3-day event of the Red River Rivalry. The warm-up starts Thursday with a brewery tour featuring Grant Jones & The Pistol Grip Lassos. Friday Cas Haley & The O's take over the biergarten. Saturday morning from 9 to 11:30 a.m. they're having a beer breakfast with the Belgian Waffle food truck, then they'll shuttle people over to the Fair Grounds. Or, just stay at the brewery and watch the game on their big screen. Finally, it's the post-game party from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with Sugarfoote & Company.
Each week the Sundown at the Granada is hosting a Wednesday Film Night on their rooftop perch at 3250 Greenville Ave. Get comfy on one of their big couches to watch Matt McConaughey hit on high school girls, or the Dude search for his rug that "hung the room together." There will be other cult-like classics, as chosen by the Dallas Film Society and in part hosted by the Dallas Observer, each Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. through November 21.
If news of the Red River Rivalry sort of makes you want to hit the road, then check out the Le Tour De Farms: Barn Aid 2012. This local event started a few years ago when surly tornado blew the top off the barn at Eden Organic farm. Each year Barn Aid grows in participation and concept. This year includes a 32-mile bike ride (or drive) from Lake Highlands Community Garden through Dallas to Eden's, with stops along the way at different community gardens, where riders will gather fresh ingredients for a community meal a the end of the ride. Mark Wootton of Garden Café, Graham Dodds of Central 214 and Chad Houser will prepare a three-course meal. Check this page for details and ticket info.
I'm always wondering, what does the Trinity taste like. Tastes of the Trinity, next Wednesday (October 17), is a membership drive of sorts for the River Rats and Rat Pack who are part of The Trinity Trust - a group of concerned Dallasites that delve into issues regarding the Trinity corridor. They're meeting at the brand spanking new Four Corners Brewing Company and will have munchies from new restaurants in the Trinity Groves and music from Larry g(EE). Concerned citizens unite! And drink craft beer! Tickets are $15 for non-members of the Trinity Trust River Rats and Rat Pack.
Also, The Pegasus Plaza Outdoor Market is this Friday, October 12, from 11am to 3pm at Main Street and Akard with live music, vintage goods, crafts and "fresh food."
