A Sneak Peek Inside the New British Beverage Company

I'm kind of a sneaky bitch. I happen to work in the Quadrangle in Uptown (AKA The Quad -- yep, I'm still trying to make that one happen), so as the British Beverage Company (or BBC) has been building out the gutted, cavernous remains of the former Hully and Mo, I've had a close look at what's gone down. Last week, I popped in and found general manager Aaron Latus. Our conversation revealed a few fun facts about Uptown's newest pubsteraunt.

BBC Fun Fact #1: Please don't call them Irish. Even though the same company that owns the BBC also owns Sherlock's and some other Houston-based haunts, the BBC is meant to be a bit different, building on the experience gained from the Sherlock's business but with a more mature decor, menu and crowd. The atmosphere might be closer to what you'd find at the Idle Rich Pub or The Old Monk, with a Timothy Oulton-esque swagger.

BBC FF #2: Patios designed for Dallas. These patios are enviable. The back patio is huge, taking up nearly all the usable space between the BBC and another BB (Baker Bros). The HVAC situation going on in the front one is going to be monstrous, with the end result being up to 20 degrees cooler (or warmer in the winter months) than the outside temperature.

BBC FF #3: Little British details. With fixtures, tufted leather and Union Jacks as far as the eye can see, the BBC's decor is full of reminders that they're a British pub. Hey! Did you know they're a British pub?

BBC FF #4: It's made for music and parties. The setup at the BBC is flexible; the front patio is designed for watch parties, there's both high and low seating, large booths and even space for an off-site business meeting, as well as separate areas for both a DJ and a live band any night of the week.

BBC FF #5: Big British imports. Joining the giant red telephone booth on the Howell Street side is a real British taxi cab.

BBC FF #6: Value-focused eats and drinks. Latus also spoke a bit about the pricing at BBC compared with the surrounding bars and restaurant. In an area pretty saturated with spots for lunch, happy hour, dinner and drinks, he said the offerings at BBC will beat most in the area when it comes to pricing and the volume you get for the money.

BBC FF #7: Soon-to-be-legendary whiskey barrels. There's a section of handmade whiskey barrels at the far end of the bar that the folks at BBC plan to make available for VIPs to store their goods. Each barrel will be lit with customizable LED lighting too. So there's that.

BBC FF #8: Lots of British foods. While the menu hasn't been finished, a few key items have been announced. Get ready for Scotch eggs, mulligatawny, a trio of meat pies and every 15-year-old boy's favorite, bangers and mash.
