In this week's food news, Amazon launches a Dallas grocery delivery service, pizza cones come to Arlington and more:
- Amazon Prime Now, the delivery service that recently launched free one-hour food delivery for Dallas Prime members, is now expanding into groceries. Via a press release: "In Dallas, Prime Now offers tens of thousands of items from Amazon in addition to delivery of farm-fresh produce, meat, seafood and more from Sprouts. Through Prime Now, 1-hour delivery is $7.99 and 2-hour delivery is free. Prime members can download the Prime Now app, available on iOS and Android devices, and will be notified when the service is available in their ZIP code."
- Plano burger joint the Royale Magnificent Burgers is going wagyu. Thanks to a new partnership with A Bar N Ranch, the restaurant will "exclusively serve A Bar N wagyu beef for all of its beef burger options on the menu, while continuing to serve a variety of non-beef burgers such as lobster, tuna, veggie and turkey," according to a news release. Although still described on Google as a restaurant where "celebrity chef John Tesar serves burgers, fancy fries and milkshakes in retro digs," Tesar left Apheleia Restaurant Group — the group behind Royale, El Bolero and Oak — earlier this year. Tesar's not the only big-name Dallas chef to walk away from a major restaurant group this year.
- If you've ever found yourself wishing your ice cream cone was filled with pizza or that your pizza was in the shape of an ice cream cone, a new chain coming to the Parks at Arlington is right up your alley. Kono Pizza will open in June, CultureMap reports, and will serve doughy cones with both sweet and savory fillings. Kona claims that aside from portability, their pizza cones have an added bonus: fewer calories than a typical slice of pizza. "One of Kono's selling points is its slightly healthier profile, thanks to a thinner crust and low-moisture cheese," CultureMap writes. "Kono's cones are 250-280 calories each, compared to 450 calories for a traditional pizza slice."
- Now that Stephan Pyles' latest restaurant Flora Street Cafe is finally up and running in the Arts District, the former Stephan Pyles restaurant that closed earlier this year appears to have found a new tenant: Tortaco, "a new Mexican concept with tacos and more from restaurateur Mike Karns," CultureMap reports. Tortaco, opening later this year, will feature "a chef-driven menu developed by chef Nico Sanchez of Meso Maya and Taqueria La Ventana fame," Teresa Gubbins writes. "The menu will be a step up from Taqueria La Ventana, with tacos and more."
- A new crepe spot is opening June 7 at the Dallas Museum of Art, D Magazine reports. Socca is an outdoor eatery near DMA's entrance that will specialize in savory chickpea crêpes.
- Deep Ellum's Braindead Brewing had big news this week: The brewery has "been chosen as one of a select number of breweries nationwide to brew the nationally famous Arrogant Bastard Ale at their brewery in Dallas," Nancy Nichols writes in D. Arrogant Bastard used to be brewed by Stone Brewing but split with the company in 2015 and will be brewed in Dallas as part of the “Arrogant Bastard Hits the Road” program, which allows "selected breweries across the country to brew this industry changing ale at their respective facilities using the official formula for the benefit of charities of their choosing," D reports. Local sales will benefit the Brain Injury Network of Dallas.
