Make Room at Il Cane Rosso for the Sweet Caramel Goodness of the Bella Mela

You may have heard Il Cane Rosso finally found a bricks-and-mortar home in the warm bosom of Deep Ellum, in the welcoming shadow of the Central Expressway overpass.

Two trips in the last week haven't gotten me any closer to being the Foursquare mayor (Doyle!), but have given me a chance to try some of the menu's deeper cuts, most notably the beautiful apple-caramel pie pictured at right, the bella mela.

If you've ever tried the dessert pie at the Pizza Hut or Cici's buffet, try to forget it. The similarities end with the shape.

It's the same thin crust as the rest of their pizzas, from dough made with imported Italian flour -- but spread with gooey vanilla bean mascarpone and topped with carmelized apple slices. What gets this done is the warm caramel drizzled over the top -- not too sweet, not thick.

It's the perfect way to keep a good night going on the patio, and kick back with the sound of the trucks rolling by overhead.
