Quittin' Time: Stoneleigh P

Each week City of Ate will give you the lowdown on a local happy hour in Quittin' Time, with the details and why you should or shouldn't take up the featured bar or restaurant on its drink specials.

Where: Stoneleigh P, 2926 Maple Ave.

When: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays

What: Half-price appetizers

Why: While it's quite apparent that this historic watering hole used to be a pharmacy (called the Stoneleigh Pharmacy, which led to its current name), it reminds us of land-rich ranchers we've known. It disguises its touch of class with a humble, welcoming, aw-shucks vibe. The parking lot may be full of Lexuses and Beamers BMWs, but any place that sells $2 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Schlitz and Pearl Light all day and every day can't be too uptight.

Plus, it's Dude-Food Approved.

Of those half-price appetizers, queso verde is by far your best bet -- though the excellent smoked chicken nachos can make for a meal on their own. The queso verde is not the typical creamy yellow carne con queso or chile con queso that you'll find at Tex-Mex joints, but rather a glob of manchego cheese floating in a foam cup of hot salsa verde. Simple, yes, but far more addictive than the homely presentation would suggest.

As for the drinks, the place has a full bar with prices a bit lower than one might expect for the Uptown location -- including, of course, those aforementioned canned brewskis, along with $2.75 Lone Stars and a moderate selection of bottled imports and domestics that all fall under $5.
