Rahr Brewing Co. in Fort Worth has more than a few things to celebrate. As we previously reported, they took home a bronze medal at the bi-annual World Beer Cup for Stormcloud, their English-style IPA. The brewery also took home several more awards at the 5th Annual Denver International Beer Competition, including golds for The Regulator Doppelbock and Stormcloud, silver for Blonde Helles Lager and Iron Thistle Strong Scotch Ale; and a bronze for Ugly Pug.
And now, Fritz Rahr will start canning his beer. The brewery, which opened in 2004, started bottling beers back in 2010.
"We have been looking at canning options for quite some time and discussed the reasons why we would want to can, Rahr says. "First and most importantly, there would be so many more opportunities and events we could participate in if only we had cans. Like, going to the lake, floating on the river, golfing, special festivals and camping."
Otherwise, he adds, they're forcing their customers to drink other's products. As for the can versus bottle debate, Fritz doesn't have an agenda. It's really just a matter of full coverage.
"I enjoy beer from both bottles and cans," he says, "though I prefer to drink beer from a good beer glass. I can't say for certain which is actually a better container for beer. I have my ideas, but they both have their positives and negatives."
Last year Samuel Adams started canning for the first time in their 30-year history, but spent $1 million on the can design alone, which has an hourglass shape at the lip. Miller did that weird hole-punch on the lid that allowed for a freer beer flow (so they say).
Recently Four Corners Brewing started canning with completely removable lids to allow for the full aroma of the beer to be enjoyed. And Martin House of Fort Worth strictly uses cans because it blocks out 100-percent light, is airtight and is for environmentally friendly.
"For us, it's all about offering our supporters another option and opportunity to drink our beer in environments where they could not before. To me, that's reason enough," says Rahr.
Rahr & Sons has invested in a canning machine from Cask Canning of Canada, which can fill up to 35 cans a minute. Pride of Texas pale ale, exclusively in cans, will first be available at the Fort Worth Music Festival next weekend, then on shelves in early June, along with Rahr's Blonde.
To celebrate cans and medals, Rahr will host a special tour and tasting on Saturday May 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. Guests will get a commemorative pint; winning t-shirts and all the koozies you can shake an ugly pug at will be for sale in the gift shop. Big Mike will be there providing tunes and Lee's Grilled Cheese and Enchiladas Ole will be there providing nourishment.
