Before a small but enthusiastic crowd of supporters, former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez officially opened her campaign for the Democratic nomination for Texas governor. Valdez, who announced her plans to try to unseat GOP Gov. Greg Abbott late last year, spoke at a rally at the Tyler Station in Oak Cliff on Sunday where she called for an end to "hate and bickering" and criticized the GOP for its focus on "fringe" issues like the transgender bathroom bill and sanctuary cities. Valdez faces a tough fight to unseat Abbott, with 10 Democrats filing for the party's March 6 primary and Abbott sitting on a $40 million campaign fund.
