How One Local Dallas Restaurant is Adapting to COVID Staffing on the Fly
The coronavirus pandemic is continuing to wreak havoc on the restaurant business, and new challenges seem to arise almost every day. From limited capacity and social distancing to new workplace controls like face coverings and temperature checks, these are unprecedented times for the food industry.
Staffing a restaurant has always been challenging and the need for fluid staffing solutions is even more important than ever. We found one local Dallas restaurant that has discovered an easy way to hire workers using the GigSmart Get Workers mobile app.

Your Way Café, a unique café dining experience offering international cuisine on a rotating menu in Dallas, experienced massive changes when the pandemic began. The restaurant had to close three of its four catering locations because business dropped off so rapidly.
But as owner Steve Gaines adapted the business, he faced a new challenge: hiring experienced, reliable workers when people called out sick or couldn’t make it to work.
After frustrations with attempts at hiring via Craigslist and social media, Gaines went looking through his smartphone app store for employment apps and found GigSmart. With 237,000 workers active in the app nationwide and over 70,000 workers in the Dallas area, Gaines was excited to try it out to fill unwanted gaps in his staff.
According to Gaines, the best part about GigSmart is that he can do it all from his phone. It’s fast, easy, and the workers are highly qualified and ready to work. Getting setup as an employer on the app took only minutes, and now he doesn’t have to manage multiple phone numbers for workers or find the time to conduct background checks before he makes a hire. GigSmart handles all of that for him so he can focus on running his business.
Some of the best workers Gaines has found on the app are people looking for a side income. They’re motivated, hardworking, and knowledgeable. GigSmart offers workers the opportunity to pick up a second job during nights and weekends to bring in a little extra cash or fill a lapse in employment while using the skills they already have.
After 14 years of operating Your Way Café, Gaines has tried a variety of staffing resources to operate his restaurant and catering business. On a scale of 1 to 10, he gives GigSmart a 10. On the other hand, tools like Craigslist he’d give a 3 because, after weeks of working with staffers, they’d fail to show up, didn't have the necessary skills, and simply didn't work out for his business.
He’s also worked with staffing agencies who charge a lot more for their services. He finds the flexibility and affordability of using GigSmart to be far superior to the expense of a staffing agency.

A Win-Win for Employers and Workers
One of the reasons why GigSmart has been so successful for Your Way Café is because both the business owner and the worker win when they use it. The business owner gets instant access to hundreds of workers right in their neighborhood, and the workers can apply, work, and get paid on the same day, directly through the app.
From Gaines’ experience, many of today’s workers are looking for an employer to knock on their door and offer them a job. GigSmart offers that simplicity and provides easy connections between employers and workers.
When you hire a worker on the app, you can see how far away they are in real-time. So if they’re just a few miles away, you know they’ll be at work within 10 minutes and that’s helpful when your business depends on reliable staffing.
And, you can openly communicate with the workers through in app messaging to ask if they have experience in a specific area or are certified food handlers. The workers can respond with their qualifications and ability to get the job done.

In 2016, Gaines purchased a food truck, but he hasn’t started operating it yet since he’s been focused on Your Way Cafe. Now that he’s been introduced to GigSmart, he believes he can open the food truck by hiring workers for it using Get Workers. With the app, Gaines no longer needs to source or hire employees, giving him the ability to fasttrack the launch of his food truck business.
As someone who isn’t originally from Texas, GigSmart has been a huge help for Gaines as a small business owner. It’s helping him make the necessary connections to operate his business without the expensive price tag of a staffing agency or the headaches of doing it himself through online forums or social media.
Gaines recognizes that you can’t do everything by yourself as a business owner. The customer support he’s gotten through GigSmart is astounding. He can call them directly with questions and talk to someone who can guide him in his staffing questions.
And if he can’t get through to someone, GigSmart calls him right back. Gaines has been amazed at how the GigSmart team serves as a go-between for him and the employees to make hiring smooth and simple.
Business is still not what it used to be before the pandemic. Gaines has been able to reopen one of his catering locations, but two remain closed. Much like all other business owners around the world facing unknowns during the pandemic, Gaines will need to continuously adapt. He’s just thankful that he has the tools necessary to scale his staffing up or down during these uncertain times.
