I couldn’t make this stuff up. Scissors that talk across the room, feathers that cough, colors that teeter…But some people have better imaginations than I do. The difference between writers and other artists is the latter’s ability to turn boring three-dimensional media (or otherwise useful kitchen objects) into an experiential construct that you can argue about for an entire evening with virtual strangers, all the while enjoying a glass of wine. Controversial modern art exhibits—the perfect evening! 500X Gallery, located at 500 Exposition Ave. between Fair Park and Deep Ellum, presents historical layered clusters by Nancy Brown, biological patterning by Sarah Maxwell-English and time fragments by Diane Sikes—mixed media works that will definitely stimulate. David Willburn and Lily Hanson’s wood collaborations and David Kirkland’s semantic gestures are featured in other rooms of this converted 1916 warehouse gallery. Opening reception is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Call 214-828-1111 or visit 500x.org.

Saturdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m.; Dec. 1-2, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Nov. 4. Continues through Nov. 18
