I’m a total wuss when it comes to camping. I get freaked out by bugs, and I sure as hell have never mastered the mid-forest squat ‘n’ piss (I don’t care what you tell me, either, just bending over doesn’t work). I blame it on the fact that I never went to camp as a kid. I never learned how to pitch a tent, tie cool knots or sing all the lyrics to “Kum Ba Yah.’ I think camp is a great opportunity for kids…even ones with chronic illness or physical disability. Camp John Marc agrees and every year offers weekend and summer camps for kids with cancer, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, muscular dystrophy and more. And for the 14th year the Camper Scamper event offers a way to raise money for North Texas kids to attend Camp John Marc. This Saturday, families can enjoy a 5K (8:30 a.m.) or 1 Mile Fun Run & Walk (8 a.m.) while more competitive types try out the brand new 10K run (8:40 a.m.). Onsite registration begins at 7 a.m. at Reverchon Park, 3505 Maple Ave. For details and registration visit lukeslocker.com, call Camp John Marc at 214-360-0056 or visit Luke’s Locker in Dallas or Plano.
