A teacher living on a meager salary. Nothing new there, right? Terrible crimes happen every day. No shocker there either. Now combine the two. Hollywood would give you Michelle Pfeiffer in a leather jacket or perhaps even a bat-wielding James Belushi riding a motorcycle through a high school. You know, the whole “teach gets on the level” shtick. But that’s old hat. Dramatic? Yes. Intriguing? Not so much. Author Sujata Massey went a little less white-bread-ghetto-savior, removed the teacher from the school for a bit and offered up The Salaryman’s Wife—a murder mystery set in Tokyo and the first of her Rei Shimura series. It’s richly descriptive and culturally observant, yet energetic. Discuss such elements with the Murder on Mondays mystery book club 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 2201 Preston Road in Plano.
