Apocalyptic graphite versus plastic transfers of youthful paint. Dunn and Brown Contemporary has done well to juxtapose two very different shows this go around. Robyn O’Neil’s This is our ending, this is our past. offers gigantic and dramatic graphite drawings that depict mind-bogglingly beautiful landscapes that are the backdrop for animals and men transitioning from life situations into a falling, drastic end. The drawings—some as large as 12 feet—are near traumatic in their stunning and tragic display but at the same time offer the prospect of new beginnings. Christian Schumann’s Plastic Youth uses the transfer technique of acrylics to canvas via plastic sheeting and offers a distinctly vivacious, even melodic product. His brightly colored works examine thought—almost whimsical physical representations of plasticity, both in terms of being plastic and regarding neural pathways, synapses and development.
