I’ve always wondered what it must be like for actors to play roles that denigrate themselves or the culture that spawned them, whether it’s a little person playing a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz or a Latino actor playing a stereotypical East L.A. gang banger in a straight-to-DVD action flick. Sure, everyone’s got to make money somehow, but at what expense? Up and coming playwright Yussef El Guindi explores this very subject in the play Jihad Jones and the Kalashnikov Babes, a comedy about an Arab-American actor forced to choose between his integrity and the million dollars he could make playing a crazed Islamic terrorist in a bad Hollywood action movie. Jihad Jones runs through June 27 at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, 3120 McKinney Ave. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with additional performances at 8 p.m. Wednesday and June 24 and 2 p.m. Sunday and June 21. Tickets are $15 to $25, or $10 to $20 for students, senior citizens and MAC, STAGE, ARTSCARD, KERA and DART members. Heck, try your library card, too.
