Quadrophenia (1979) is more than just a movie. It's a glimpse into a young man's complicated life. It is 1965 in London and working-class Jimmy (Phil Daniels) hates his job and is misunderstood by his parents, but he loves his all-nighters, his pills and his scooter-riding fellow Mods. Then there's the August Bank Holiday scooter run, where Mods and Rockers converge, ending in the battle on Brighton Beach. Jimmy's life changes when he is kicked out of his house, betrayed by a good friend and discovers his idol (played by Sting) is nothing worth looking up to, after all. He begins a downward spiral into paranoia and isolation, where he discovers that nothing is what he thought it was. Directed and written by Franc Roddam, with help in both writing and production by members of The Who, Quadrophenia is set against a stellar soundtrack by The Who with help from a host of Motown artists and others, helping the film come full circle in realistically portraying the violence and style of 1960s London.
