A little more than two years has passed since we openly wondered if Big Chief, long one of Dallas’ premiere underground street rappers, has what it takes to be the Next Big Thing out of the Dallas hip-hop scene.

Now, though, it seems as if we’re closer to our answer. The ever-prolific Chief, who is currently putting the finishing touches on his 12th edition of his Eat Greedy mixtape series, has now been officially signed to Cash Money Records. The New Orleans-based label run by Bryan “Birdman” Williams (also known as “Baby”) is home to a number of big names in the national hip-hop market, including Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Jay Sean and the entire Young Money Entertainment crew, which includes Oak Cliff’s Lil Twist.

No word yet on what exactly the deal entails — or, perhaps more importantly, when we can finally hear what kind of material Chief can come up with now that he has some major backing — but we’ll keep you posted as that information comes.

In the meantime, if you want, you can congratulate Chief on his signing this Friday night, as he takes to Arlington’s Club D-Mixx to celebrate the news.
