The first weekend of the SMU school year is here, which means some of our local co-eds, the ones blessed with those elusive hosting genes, will spend today pestering of-age classmates for booze, hiding their valuables and vacuuming. Always vacuuming. Scientists remain baffled by our insistence on vacuuming before parties, but alas, out the Hoover comes.
This moment had us thinking about what these students will be listening to as the weekend's festivities commence, so we asked a few SMU sorority girls -- sophomores, 19 or 20 or so -- to engage in an age-old tradition usually reserved for the Thanksgiving dinner table: answering lame-ass questions from old people.
So, what's a sorority party playlist look like these days?

Here's another student's take:
When I go to frat parties, I can pretty much guarantee I'll hear the same things: excessively loud, rhythmic music with some sexual message. The song "Racks on Racks," while old, is a fan favorite and pretty much always played. Same is true for anything by LMFAO. For new songs, it seems like no one can get enough of Maroon 5's new songs like "Tickets," "One More Night" and "Payphone." Flo Rida's "Whistle" and Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's "Good Time" also never fail to please. The British boy bands The Wanted and One Direction, of course, are always played at least once. "Chasing the Sun" by The Wanted is definitely fun. I also really like Grouplove's "Tongue Tied." And of course, we can't forget the Biebs.
I also asked them which song was sure to unglue the party from the couch. "The Wobble" got a vote, as did "Wagon Wheel" -- that's "if there are boys and girls there." Also cited: "As Long As You Love Me" by Justin Bieber, "Whistle" by Flo Rida, and the new Taylor Swift single, "We Are Never Getting Back Together."
But "if it's just girls," one student told me, "it's embarrassingly, definitely, no competition: 'Call Me Maybe.'"
You're probably thanking your local deity that you're not in college these days. Me? I spent the weekend driving my mother-in-law's car, which was locked on Top 40. I'm thinking I'd make a pretty kick-ass sorority girl right now.
