MGMT‘s Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden willed themselves to fame with “Time to Pretend,” the biggest movie-trailer indie crossover hit since “Paper Planes.” Now they want us to know that they can play with that popularity. The chewy new Congratulations isn’t at all bad, despite their vehement desire to release zero singles. Contributing to the Flaming Lips‘ cyclonic Embryonic last year has had positive effects on the pair’s ability to sustain and sweep, and opening for Beck has boosted MGMT’s confidence as well. Seems the duo is trying to tell us that “Time to Pretend” and “Kids” were “Creep” and “Loser,” not “Tubthumping” and “The Freshman.”
