These New York-based indie dabblers aren't nearly as obnoxious as you might fear: Yes, they are two American rock guys--guitarist Chris Root and keyboardist Jon Marshall Smith--and a Brazilian singer named Juju Stulbach, which sounds like the premise of a shitty sketch comedy, or the foundation of an ad for United Colors of Benetton. But on Sunshine Barato, their second album, they swirl their stylistic colors--indie rock, bossa nova sway, chill-out melodies--so guilelessly they pre-empt any claim of opportunism. Earlier this year Mosquitos toured with Air; let's hope they've taken a cue in how to do this stuff live. Houston's synth-heavy Modulator opens.
