These New York-based indie dabblers aren’t nearly as obnoxious as you might fear: Yes, they are two American rock guys–guitarist Chris Root and keyboardist Jon Marshall Smith–and a Brazilian singer named Juju Stulbach, which sounds like the premise of a shitty sketch comedy, or the foundation of an ad for United Colors of Benetton. But on Sunshine Barato, their second album, they swirl their stylistic colors–indie rock, bossa nova sway, chill-out melodies–so guilelessly they pre-empt any claim of opportunism. Earlier this year Mosquitos toured with Air; let’s hope they’ve taken a cue in how to do this stuff live. Houston’s synth-heavy Modulator opens.
