Texas rapper Adair Lion just released his new video for “Ben,” which uses the hook from the Michael Jackson song of the same name. The song is off his upcoming release Michael & Me, which will drop on the anniversary of Jackson’s death in June. More notable, though, is the message of the song.
“Gay is okay/The number one thing a rapper shouldn’t say,” goes one of the lines, as Lion states up front the taboo of homosexuality in rap and hip-hop, and continues to knock down the stigma in a positive way. Just last year, The Game called for gay rappers to come out of the closet, which pinpointed the divide within the genre. Lion’s approach is a little more open-minded. Hopefully this video gets some traction in and out of Texas, too.
