Something’s Up in the Cereal Aisle
Yucky Children Charmer, Cereal Killer, Cap’n Corn Starch and Kill Frog’s Sugar Smack are snuggled into the breakfast options. On the next aisle over, the chubby Morton salt girl is trailing toward Hilter’s Helper and Rush Brand Oxycontin while boxes of Tupac bullets remind “firearms sold separately.” At Ron English’s Brandit-Popmart there are obese Ronald McDonald and cartons of MLK. As a popaganda artist, English is weaving a story bigger than the nutrition facts. English makes products that talk back, using advertisements and iconography in a method similar to Andy Warhol, but with psychedelic treatment. Embedding his art in grocery stores, he hopes to change the one-way conversation that advertising creates. English is known for his brightly saturated critique of consumerism that leaves a taste of the bizarre in your mouth. The UNT alum’s Brandit-Popmart is coming to UNT on the Square (109 N. Elm St. in Denton) Monday through March 8. English will be at the opening reception 5 to 7 p.m. March 7.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 9 a.m.-noon. & 1-5 p.m. Starts: March 4. Continues through March 8, 2014
