Author Rick Bass‘ works are so intellectual that their overriding theme is a homonym. Nature, as in “the nature of the human heart” and environmental nature. The point where nature and nature intersect is where Bass’ stories lie. Blending detailed accounts of his natural surroundings with rich, informative narratives, Bass’ books give readers an idea of not just where the author is, but who he is–a Rocky Mountain dweller by way of Fort Worth, with a contagious appreciation for points in between. Bass’ works include The Hermit’s Story: Stories; Brown Dog of the Yaak; Essays on Art and Activism; Colter: The True Story of the Best Dog I Ever Had; and The Roadless Yaak: Reflections and Observations About One of Our Last Great Wilderness Areas. His most recent publication is Wild Marsh: Four Seasons at Home in Montana. The University of Texas at Dallas hosts an evening with Bass as part of its Arts & Humanities Lecture Series, where he’ll read from his selected fiction works at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Jonsson Performance Hall on the UTD campus, 800 W. Campbell Drive in Richardson. Admission is free. Call 972-883-2787 or visit ah.utdallas.edu.
