It’s a decade-long art trick in the making, and an undertaking so intense that most people would say the man behind it is a bit insane, if we didn’t already know him to be Chris Byrne, the co-founder of the Dallas Art Fair. The Magician, a graphic novel comprising 12 separate publications of various bookmaking techniques (many of which are handmade; some of which are not really books in the traditional sense) and presented in a crate that looks as if it could house a very bendy assistant were it not for the works inside. As much as we could go on and on about it, it’s best to see the assuredly epic The Magician in person, in all its overwhelming and inspiring glory. Do that during a debut reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Reading Room, 3715 Parry Ave. Don’t miss a talk by the publisher, Ed Marquand, at 7:30 p.m. Trust us, you’ll want to know anything and everything you can about this mysterious, funny, and absolutely stunning work of … well, you know. The Magician will be on display through May 17. Visit thereadingroom-dallas.blogspot.com.
Thu., May 1, 7-9 p.m.; Saturdays, 2-5 p.m. Starts: May 1. Continues through May 17, 2014
