There’s a perfect film for anyone who’s ever wandered into this state and wondered why the hell people get so hyped up about Truck Month: Hands on a Hard Body: The Documentary. The 1997 S.R. Bindler doc chronicles an endurance challenge between 24 contestants in Longview. The goal? To be the last one touching—and therefore owning—a shiny, new pickup. While there are breaks allotted the contestants for stretching and other relief, disqualification occurs if one is caught leaning on the truck or squatting. It seems simple, but it’s intense, and it gets personal. So inspired by the story, La Jolla Playhouse in California commissioned a musical by Doug Wright, Amanda Green, and Trey Anastasio (yes, the guy from Phish). The Tony Award-nominated musical delves more into the lives of the contestants, as well as the dealer and a radio announcer, while the sun blazes down on the 10 competitive spirits struggling to maintain a hold on their prize. Theatre Three, 2800 Routh St., presents this song-laden version of Hands on a Hardbody September 25-October 19. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sundays. There’s a Saturday matinee October 18. Tickets are $10-$50. Visit theatre3dallas.com.
