If the phrase “patron of the arts” always seemed enticing, but tragically unattainable, Thursday is your night for reinvention. That’s when Dallas Theater Center offers a special pay-what-you-can performance for the highly anticipated local premiere of Red, winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play. It’s a lovely evening for the mostly broke, as John Logan’s masterpiece about the life of artist Mark Rothko can be seen from any available seat, whether you drop a buck or a Benjamin. Red is a dramatic glimpse into the famous painter’s life, and it’s made even more intimate by its setting. The DTC (in collaboration with the DMA) is turning the ninth floor of the highly versatile, Transformer-like Wyly Theatre (2400 Flora St.) into the artist’s personal studio — trust us, you won’t want to miss that. The show runs through March 24. Pay-what-you-can night is limited to Thursday’s opening performance. Box office opens at 6:30 p.m. and showtime is at 7:30.
