So I tried to read a little Harry Potter fan fiction. It got a little racy, and I felt a little…OK, I felt really wrong. So, I thought, maybe if the witches and wizards were “of age,” you know? Perhaps I picked the wrong book, but it still didn’t work out well. Call me jaded, but I think author Shanna Swendson may have garbled up a perfectly good office-setting whodunnit with hocus pocus in Once Upon Stilettos. Here’s the thing: J.K. Rowling has somehow created an entire world based in magic that is so realistic I can fall head-first into a kids’ series. Swendson, however, hasn’t won me over by just adding magic elements to everyday places and occurances. I am not endeared by her executive assistant at Magic, Spells and Illusions, Inc., Katie, or her “magic” stilettos. I just don’t buy Merlin being a CEO, either. For me, it’s gotta be all magic or nothing, but if readers out there like the mash-up, Swendson is signing Stilettos 1 p.m. Sunday at Borders, 3600 McKinney Ave. Call 214-219-0512.
