As if the act of walking through the Dallas Museum of Art wasn’t already a trip through time, their current exhibition The Museum is History, is a celebration of the past (and perhaps even the future) of art. The exhibition features over thirty works, spanning from the 1950’s to the 90s’, curated from the deep recesses of the DMA’s massive vault, as well as loans from private collections in Dallas. Gavin Delahunty, the DMA’s new Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, selected staples of the museum’s collection as well as some more obscure pieces for this showing. Moving from Pollock’s chaotic classic Portrait of a Dream (1953), to the more modern and stark I Am a Man (1987), by Jenny Holzer, as well as works by Frank Stella, John Chamberlain, Morris Louis and more. The exhibit takes you through a period where the chaos of gestural abstraction gave way to the focused symmetry of minimalism.
