Everything I know about horse racing I learned from watching the Marx Brothers. In A Day at the Races Chico taught me about wagering (and to always steer clear of a guy selling tootsie frootsie ice cream and code books), Groucho taught me that horse doctors make questionable sanitarium doctors but excellent singers, and Harpo showed me that the way to insure a horse’s speedy success is by showing them a picture of someone they despise. Well, thoroughbred racing season is upon us once again and if you take your horse racing a little more seriously than I do, then it’s time to trot down to Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie (1000 Lone Star Parkway) this Saturday for the Lone Star Derby. As an added treat, Lone Star Park is giving away sets of four commemorative Lone Star Derby Glasses in celebration of its 10th Anniversary Season (free with paid general admission). The Grandstand Gates open at 11:30 a.m. and the first race of the day starts at 1:35 p.m., with live music on the Courtyard of Champions stage from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $3 to $25. Call 972-263-RACE or visit lonestarpark.com.
Sat., May 12, 11:30 a.m.
