For four days before writing this, I checked several online book retailers regarding The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey, My Passions: Photos and Mementos from Q’;s Personal Collection. At least twice during the searches, the book–which features a preface by the renowned Maya Angelou, a foreword by Clint Eastwood and an intro by Bono–was temporarily sold out. The personal snippets of Jones are in high demand, apparently, and it’s honestly no surprise. Sure, he’s got Grammy nominations hovering around 80 (actual statues are almost up to 30) and is a recognized humanitarian, but I’ve got a theory on why people really want to see behind the man. Why they really want to see the life behind the myth, behind the awards, behind that mustache, behind Q. Um, hello, the man wrote “Soul Bossa Nova” (think Austin Powers running from mod mobs in the street), the theme for The Bill Cosby Show and…wait for it…the theme for Sanford and Son. Yeah, go ahead and sing it. “Bam-ba-ba-nah…” Felt good, didn’t it? Well, it’ll feel even better to meet the legend in person. Quincy Jones signs and discusses The Complete Quincy Jones 7 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Highway. Call 214-739-1124.
