So I’m doing a little research for this here Tzedakah Box Competition and Exhibition, and I ask a Jewish Co-worker (who shall remain unnamed) what a tzedakah box is. “Oh, that’s the box where you put the charity—the donations,” J.C. says. I jot down these notes next to “highly collectible” and “often artistically decorated” as J.C. adds something along the lines of, “Yeah, man, I haven’t put dick in one of those in years. It’s terrrrrible.” Unfortunately, J.C. didn’t find it necessary to qualify either of his statements by inserting the words “Judaic object,” “tzedakah” or “I am not talking about the sex act.” I’ll spare everyone the totally perverse comments that spewed forth from surrounding cubicles, but suffice to say they were really, really funny. Now these tzedakah boxes…all exhibited boxes are created by both noted Judaica artists and local artists and are for sale. The juried contest is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Aaron Family Jewish Community Center, 7900 Northaven Road. The exhibition will continue through February 19.
