Don Your Silver Underwear

What's not to love about this campy sci-fi plot synopsis? On the distant planet Mongo, New York Jets quarterback "Flash" Gordon fights to save the earth from certain destruction at the hands of the merciless Emperor Ming...all with aid of the brilliant Dr. Hans Zarkov and the beautiful, um, travel agent Dale Arden. With an epic soundtrack composed and performed by Queen, acting greats like Max von Sydow as Ming and Chaim Topol as Zarkov, and a screenplay foundation by Lorenzo Semple Jr. (who wrote the screenplay for the campy 1966 Batman film, as well as the equally over-the-top television series), Flash Gordon ranks as one of the finest camp classics of all time. Based on a 1930s science fiction comic strip created by Alex Raymond that was quickly turned into a series of amazingly entertaining, and highly influential film serials staring Buster Crabbe, the 1980s film makes for a perfect late-night flick. The film starts rolling at midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane, as part of the Midnight Madness series. Admission is $10.
