Dave Allardice aka Dave Paradice is a dance music-loving, Scotch whisky-sipping DJ/Producer originally from Scotland. Paradice transplanted to Dallas 10 years ago. He has found a home amongst the Motif crew and can be found at their monthly residency at Scotch & Sausage. Paradice is well versed in the classic techno and house forms of club music and brings the experience to this week's mixtape. Paradice has been DJing over half of his life and for this week's Q&A he breaks down his journey and what inspires him behind the decks.
How did you get started DJing? How long have you been at it?
It's been just over 17 years since I got my first set of turntables. I moved to Holland in 1995 and found myself obsessed with the Dutch hardcore scene. I returned to Scotland in 1997 where I met Andrew Begg, a good friend of mine. Back then he was one of the few in Scotland that still had a strong interest in the hardcore scene. We spent hours mixing Scott Brown and other hardcore/gabber records on his old Soundlab belt drive turntables. I fell in love with mixing and cutting up records. A few months later I got my own first set of belt drive tables for Christmas and began collecting hardcore, trance, techno and house records. We rode the bus most Saturday mornings up to Glasgow to spend what little cash we had on expensive import records in the famous 23rd Precinct record store in Glasgow which is now sadly closed after 50 years in business.
Is there a particular theme for the track selection?
I love all styles of dance music but spend most of my time floating somewhere between deeper styles of house through to more full-on, slamming techno. I like to try and incorporate a blend of these styles building a flow from something slower and more mellow through to some full on techno stompers.
Where do you dig for tracks for your sets?
I listen to a lot of podcasts and mixes I find on SoundCloud. I gain inspiration from many of these but buy most of my tracks on Beatport. There's so much good music around but there's also tons of crap to sift through so I find it's a pretty time consuming process these days.
Do you still buy vinyl?
No, but I do miss it. Before I moved to the U.S. in 2005 I had turntables and CDJs. I didn't want to pay for shipping so sold my turntables and kept the CDJs. I never did get round to buying a replacement set and with the constant evolution of the CDJs and the price of vinyls I found it hard to ever justify going back to vinyl.
What DJs and producers have had a significant impact on you as an artist?
Mauro Picotto and Scott Brown were massive influences in my early days when I was getting into DJing back in late '90s, early 2000s. Both truly cutting edge, unique producer/DJs, way ahead of the competition. I remember before Picotto was really well known we got into a club in Northampton, England to see him play for one pound! Nowadays there are tons of influences but to name a few, Nic Fanciulli, AudioFly, Maya Jane Coles, Adam Beyer, Alan Fitzpatrick, Huxley and of course my most recent production mentor, James Patrick.
What is your most memorable music experience of the past year?
We were in Amnesia, Ibiza last summer and saw Maya Jane Coles play a brilliant warm up set followed by Adam Beyer, who smashed the place. Ibiza in general though, to be honest. It's expensive to get there but totally worth it. I saw a great tagline on one of the clubs bathroom walls. It read, "Ibiza, you have changed, but I still love you!"
What is your most memorable DJ gig to play?
Well I've yet to play at Space in Ibiza but when I do, that will be it. Up to this point though I'd have to say playing at Zubar for the first time was one to remember. But one of the most memorable has to be the very first gig I played in Dallas back in 2005. I had just met local DJ/Musician and all round gent of a man, Chris Rodriguez, earlier that night for the first time. When I got on the decks he nudged me, saxophone in hand and asked if I mind him playing over the top of the track. Mind blown! It may have been a fairly dodgy after-hours spot but it's not often you get asked by a live saxophone player if they can play over your set.
What is your affiliation with Motif?
I became friends with Roberto and everyone connected at Motif through some mutual friends and we've had a nice monthly event at S&S that I've been helping run now for the last six months or so. We kicked the residency off in unique style with a Scotch whisky tasting to accompany the DJ line up. I always knew that Scotch and house music could go hand in hand!
Do you have a preference between DJing and production?
Love both obviously but I'd have to say DJing. You can listen to my older mixes and original productions on SoundCloud.
What other genres of music do you enjoy outside of dance music?
Lots of hip-hop, some funk, chill out and pretty much any style of dance music. I hardly listen to any bands or rock music of any type. Prefer a synth over a guitar any day.

No gigs coming up as of now although I'm currently putting together an experiential event soon in Dallas. I'm an ambassador for Glenfiddich, hosting tastings et cetera and am exploring the idea to incorporate audio and visual elements into a Scotch whisky tasting for a new type of sensory experience.
