In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Kevin Welch, much like his friend Steve Earle, never fit any major-label marketing scheme. Lost between rock and country before Uncle Tupelo ushered in the Americana alternative, Welch has now found surprising success touring and recording deep-rooted acoustic blues with Keiran Kane. The duo’s latest effort Lost John Dean recently topped the Americana chart, outperforming releases from Bruce Springsteen and Mark Knopfler. Songs such as “Satan’s Paradise” and “To the Harvest Look Ahead” are authentic statements of front-porch wisdom. Welch’s seasoned voice imparts sage advice and well-timed warnings, admonitions filled with biblical imagery which carry the impact that his experience and rural insight demand.
