Funny that Yo! Majesty’s Futuristically Speaking…Never Be Afraid didn’t make Christianity Today or Patrol‘s 2008 best faith-based albums lists. After all, “Never Be Afraid,” from the Florida electro-crunk rap duo, offers a frank presentation of the Christian gospel, bemoaning worldly evils and celebrating the salvation offered by the Holy Ghost.

Perhaps the omission is because, on the very next song, Yo! Majesty’s Shunda K. raps about wanting to get with a sexual exhibitionist right there in the club, offering the following come-on: “I’m ah put my arm up like we ’bout to arm wrestle, you can sit on dis fist it won’t be no hassle.” Yeah, that probably has something to do with it.

The fundamentalists can titter about whether Shunda’s and collaborator JWL B’s homosexuality negates their faith, and the feminists can wring their un-lubed hands over the group’s lyrical objectifications of their fellow women. But the “Night Riders” Yo! Majesty sings to will be too busy dancing to the breakneck beats and twisted synths to realize there’s a controversy going on. So praise Jesus and fire dat blunt up.

Natalie Stewart, aka The Floacist from London neo-soul outfit Floetry, opens.
