Hadn't intended to look at the Dallas Independent School District board's meeting agendas till next week -- damn, summer break went by in a hurry -- but Tawnell Hobbs gives us an early warning: Trustee Ron Price would like to rename some schools for President Barack Obama and your newest Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor. Should come up for a vote in, oh, three weeks. Three long weeks.

See for yourself on the district's Web site: O.M. Roberts Elementary was supposed to be named for Ray Hunt Sr., but he took a pass per this briefing document. So, instead, Price went with Sotomayor. Meanwhile, the South Dallas campus that will replace the Billy Earl Dade Middle Learning Center would be named for the president; the library, for Michelle Obama. All I can say is: Thank God there's already a DISD school named for César Chávez.

Keep the Dallas Observer Free... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
