Widespread Panic, like many great musicians including most legendary jazz musicians, experiment with music and jam until the end of the song. This band gives you the very last drop of what they have in them to play this song for you, the audience. Unfortunately there will always be narrow-minded haters, impatient for the next song to play only so that they can down their 40 ounce faster so that they can get home and do nothing but watch mindless tv again. Open yourself up to the experience. Let yourself float away like floating on a pool on a warm day. That's the feeling that i get when i listen. Try looking up their lyrics so that you know what is being said.

As a Panic fan, I can certainly agree with some of your sentiments. I have been at shows where songs went on too long or the placement of the song sucked the life from the room. It has happened. I admit it. But the very things that you criticize are the things that keep people hooked on this and other bands. Sure, we have seen and heard these songs before but the beauty and mystery of the shows is not knowing where the artists are going to take you on each song. We don't want a studio version of a song played live. We want them to go where the songs and music take them and appreciate to be along for the ride.

I assume the writer of this article has no real thought or feeling inside of his close small-brained head. I am 26 years old and have been listening to and touring with and staying faithful to Widespread Panic since I was 14 and saw them for the first time. You have no idea what we went through when Mikey died! The only reason the boys are still playing is because that is what their hearts have led them to do. The legions of fans that follow Panic are not a bunch of hippies that steal or rob, they are individuals who have become a family. Your insensitive comments are uncalled for. Some of my closest friends are from Panic tours whom I still talk with everyday. We will not go quietly into the night, and we are nothing like Phisheads. We azre loving individuals who love the beautiful and soulful music Panic puts out nightly. Go try tormenting somw other band. Leave Panic and us fans alone!

We love our Widespread Panic. I am very disappointed with the stereotype that has been placed on the fans of this band. As with any band, there is a wide range people that listen to them. I work with an Cardiothoracic Surgeon who listens to them as he performs open-heart surgery. Everyone I know who has seen a WSP show is very impressed with their talent and versatility. Darryl probably needs to do something else with his life. This band is the best live performing band I have ever seen and they make me so happy. And the most important thing is to know that Michael Houser is a legend and has created some of the most brilliant quitar solos ever to be played. Darryl is obviously not a very smart man and has no right to critique Mikey or any member of WSP.

While I am not a Widespread Panic fan, I do understand that there are different tastes and opinions out there. Thank God, we are all a bit different! As far as this article goes, I believe the writer must be young or one with a very negative, immature outlook on life. Wow. You must really like to write about things you dont really know about. Widespread panic is like a family reunion for kids that went to SEC schools. Most people in attendance hold good jobs (most of which probably pay more than yours). You didnt even write one easy to follow sentence in that whole article. In fact, your attempt to use the jargon surrounding jam bands and the hippy culture made your article even more choppy. My head is still hurting and I have read some good things in the past. Anyway, maybe you should try to actually attend a Widespread Panic show for yourself. The experience is all your own. Professional stoners havent been near me at the 105 shows I have been to. Im yawning after reading your article. Im sure you are a pretty interesting person. ACtually, i bet you are more like an intraverted nerd who tries to state his opinions on paper because you cant get them out in actually speech. For some of us who have been following the band since their teenage years, your comments were very abrasive and uncalled for. This is a lifestyle for some of us who plan our vacations around their tours and save money when they're not on tour. This is what we do, it is part of my identity. I can't get mad at you for your comments as a whole, but please leave Michael Houser out of your writing. He was a great family man and loved the band and the fans so much. JB and the boys would not still be going at it if he wanted it to end with his passing. Like it or not Panic is selling tickets at a very rapid pace, yet they still stay out of the media and sterotypical FM radio stations. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have countless friends (including my long time boyfriend) who are the people that you describe in your article. As a classically trained pianist and fan of varous genres of music, I find Widespread to be the most boring, pointless group ever. I've suffered through endless (and you know I mean ENDLESS) concerts with the people that I love only to vow never to return to hippie-land as I call it. I have found that most of these followers know nothing about music, aren't musicians themselves and most importantly will not accept ANY criticism of these over-the-hill burnouts. I just read you response article and it amazes me that the exact people who preach from their holier-than-though pedastals about kindness and peace, blah blah blah can attack a journalist with children for simply making an obvious observation - ALL WIDESPREAD SONGS SOUND THE SAME! Keep up the good work.

Lets see what first, Are you aware the Grateful Dead received the prestigious Life Time Achievement Award at the 2007 Grammy�s. However, Widespread Panic does not imitate the Grateful Dead, they use the same formula to their shows, i.e. never playing the same show twice, allowing audience taping and excel at improve. You have obviously never listen to or for that matter read Widespread Lyrics, or couldn�t say their lyrics have nothing to say. What you really mean to say is the lyrics have nothing to do with you, because their music is about being kind, generous, about having fun. Try reading the lyrics to C Brown. Your next couple paragraphs are so bad; I�m not going to bother commenting. Except to say I�m a Professional Engineer, who hasn�t taken a drug since I was 16. and have enjoyed approximately 130 shows over the last decade or so. Lastly, what a pathetic human being you must be to bring up Michael Houser in such a shitty review, nothing like kicking a dead man�s legacy around. I think your church, sports and the music you like suck! How does that feel?

It could only come from a Dallas writer. We don't expect you to know anything about music, and you prove the point. Thank you for letting the fine 30K millionaires in Dallas know to stay at their cheesy night clubs, and have Rolling Stone magazine tell them what good music is. I am glad that you did not enjoy it, and thank god you will never come back. The last thing I want to see is all of the fake people in Dallas blowing coke in the bathroom, making sure their bleach tips are in order while spraying on fake tan.

Jam bands are the last refuge of the musically challenged. If it's freeform it has to be good? Uh, no. Production values are not an indication of "lack of soul" or creativity.

Obviously you did not listen to the show on Saturday because it was anything but boring. I'm interested in what you think good music is. Don't get me wrong I like all kinds of music and agree with people having their own opinion but the last thing I need a WSP concert is No Doz. That being said, I noticed in your article you used the word gravy train. Well here in the dirty south a gravy train is very nasty sexual act. Okay to explain gravy is sperm or female ejaculate otherwise known as skeet. train is a line of men who come one after another whether it be front, back or mouth and can and usually does include two or all three holes. Anyway after the men in line have had their way, gravy aka skeet, cum, manjuice is everywhere hence gravytrain. The only reason I bring this up is b/c myself and 3 other friends of mine from Little Rock made the trip down to Dallas to see one of the greatest bands ever in Dallas. To my suprise your mother in law that you complained about receiving vulgar voicemails was there and I find it hard to believe that she could find anything vulgar b/c after the show we went to the holiday inn and gravytrained her for the better part of 3 hours.
