Happiness Is a Warm Gun

Draw, pardner: How many times has this happened to you? You're out doing the grocery shopping, picking up the dry cleaning, etc. You get back to your car and realize you left your lights on. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, the lead starts flying. A crazed gunman has opened fire. You reach for your hip, forgetting momentarily that—damn!—you had to leave your hog leg at home because of a pesky Texas law that doesn't generally let citizens walk about the streets strapped. Don't you just hate that? Isn't that inconvenient?

Oh, and on top of that, your car battery's dead.

What's that you say? You haven't been in a situation lately in which you felt the need to slap iron, and you don't think a return to the Longbranch Saloon is a good idea? Well, la-dee-dah, Mr. Civilized 2008 Person, you must be one of those types who go about blissfully unprepared for life's exigencies: no spare stamps in your desk, no jumper cables in your trunk and no desire to hang a Peacemaker from your belt.

Lucky for the rest of Texas, a group called www.opencarry.org has started an advertising drive and petition effort aimed at persuading state legislators to get with the times—the times being, apparently, 1870—and pass a law allowing Texans to carry unconcealed weapons. Supporters want the law, one of them told The Associate Press, for "the same reason I wear my seatbelt, carry a spare tire and have a working fire extinguisher." Right-o. Because putting out fires, fixing a flat and driving safely are activities in the same class as plugging one of your fellow men in the spleen with a lead slug. Better safe than sorry!

The effort to have Texas join the ranks of "open carry" states is part of what promises to be an entertaining 2009 legislative session, Second Amendment-wise. State Senator Jeff Wentworth is promising to propose a bill that would allow holders of concealed-weapon permits to carry guns on college campuses. As Wentworth noted in his online column in August, under current law, only people 21 and older can obtain concealed-carry permits except for active or honorably discharged members of the military. So under his proposal, Wentworth wrote, there wouldn't be many guns on campus. Professors and seniors, presumably—those students old enough to legally obtain alcohol and who face graduation into a cold, cold job market—would be those most likely to have permits. That could make for some lively Socratic debates about midterm grades, one imagines, which would potentially reduce the number of snot-nosed punks willing to do your job at half the wages.

Well Mr. Williams... The consensus had spoken... You suck. Your articles a bit too bias to be good. I guess you're one of those sad people who actually expects the police to save your ass.

  • Charles Martel 12/22/2008 5:21:00 PM

Given what Freud taught, I feel sorry for the authors "significant other".

  • Greg 12/12/2008 3:09:00 AM

Three cheers for Mr Williams. You did a bang up job on this story. Perhaps next time you will champion the cause to abolish concealed carry in your great state of Texas. As a Bad Guy, I've been falling on hard times lately trying to earn a living in the surrounding states, seems like everyone I've encountered lately has either had one of them 'Hog legs' strapped to his leg or isn't playing by rules and carrying his 'piece' concealed. Things have gotten so bad in Arizona and New Mexico, the only place I now consider safe for me to work is in those locations where guns are prohibited, especially the shopping malls and stores that have those 'No guns allowed' signs. I mean no self-respecting citizen would dare carry their legal guns into those joints, so they are the best places for me to work. And if you really want to impress me and my buddies, next time I or one of my 'Bad guy' friends uses a gun and causes a major incident, please don't hesitate to take that opportunity to push for more stringent legislation to take guns away from the good guys and increase the number of Target Rich Environment... ah I mean Gun Free Zones. Thanks again, your friendly Bad Guy

  • Tess 12/09/2008 8:56:00 PM

My heart goes out to Mr. Williams. To have nothing in his life worth fighting for makes one a lonely individual. His life in a deluded world, where only bad guys (like cops, and FBI agents, and others who will arrive later to string crime-scene tape and write reports) carry guns, makes him worthy of my pity. Mr Williams - some day, may you have true friends, or family willing to fight for your life, should you need it. It's the least I can wish for you this holiday season.

  • Motomom 12/08/2008 11:35:00 PM

May you never have to defend your family. I will continue to fight for the right to defend mine. And, even if open carry passes, I'll probably still keep my weapon concealed. Wouldn't want to stress out the gun haters. Besides, as a grandma, I doubt that a bad guy will suspect that I am armed, so I have the element of surprise. Yay!

  • Ed 12/08/2008 10:32:00 PM

Why is Mr. Williams allowed to pollute my eyes with his juvenile ramblings? We need to seriously re-think this First Amendment thing. He should need a license to write like an idiot. By the way, the Long Branch Saloon was in Dodge City, Kansas, an open carry state. Try a little research next time.

  • Benjamin Brown 12/08/2008 8:37:00 PM

What utter tripe. The author of this used Kleenex passing as editorial journalism deserves nothing more than to be ripped from his world of DVDs and Tivo'ed episodes of Gunsmoke and OZ and be allowed to confront what are utterly safe and sane people who, carrying in the tradition of assuming personal responsibility for their security before crying out to police who may or may not be around to help, live normal and healthy lives with firearms close at hand. "Strapping up," "slapping iron" and brandishing a hogs leg?? Really?? This is what passes for journalism in the Bastille of Bush? One lone liberal arts major screaming out in the night against those who'd push him into the ranks of those asking if you'd prefer special sauce at 11:06 PM on a Wednesday night with a Mac and a voice will not bring the demise of 80 million American gun owners who do not commit crimes, cherish our traditions, and would prefer to put down a criminal than watch our families fall victim to him? You, sir, are a joke.

  • Pete 12/05/2008 6:36:00 PM

The title should be changed to: Ignorance is Bliss. Mr Williams must live in a peachy protected little world, because he's clearly just as ignorant as the standard bed wetting liberal "journalist". Most of the country lives in states where Open Carry is legal. Even California allows it in most counties. I really don't care if "people" like Mr Williams are comfortable with my being "strapped". My right to self preservation trumps his emotionally immature and irrational fears.

  • Gary 12/05/2008 3:43:00 PM

Wow, what a shame. Before you write an article you need to do your research first. Take a look at all the mall shootings and the car jackings. I guess that not everyone can live in a fantasy world. I hope that you are never in need of a armed citizen to protect you but I hope that one is there to help if you do. How many more civil rights must be taken before people realize we are losing the freedoms that our Country was based on?

  • Nick 12/05/2008 1:43:00 AM

What a doofus. Maybe one day when he gets mugged or his wife gets raped he'll change his anti-freedom position.

  • MB 12/05/2008 12:56:00 AM

What a bunch of blather. Blather based on fear and ignorance..not facts. I suggest that the Dallas Observer screen their writers a little better. If they continue to publish people who type whatever they like with no regards to the truth, they will come off looking as foolish as the writer.

  • S 12/04/2008 9:56:00 PM

Amusing but it trivalizes the real issue. Many Texans already DO carry a handgun for reasons that you may or may not approve of and it will continue no matter what happens to this proposal. The change that is being proposed only concerns logistics. Do you have to conceal your sidearm on that 100 degree day? In the winter, can you take your coat off after coming into a warm building after having been in the cold? If Texans can already carry, why make it more difficult that is reasonably necessary? Further, where are these macho folks strutting their stuff in the other 44 states of the union? Why isn't New Mexico exploding with bravado violence? Where is the mayhem from Louisiana? As these neighboring states demonstrate, you have nothing to fear, but that doesn't make for such a snarky piece, does it? For an adult, logical look at the issue that presents both sides I recommend JFloyd's column in the DMN a few days ago. She wisely points out that the hyperbole both ways should be ignored in favor of the facts. Those are that this change would make very little practical difference in the lives of most Texans. You aren't going to see roving gangs of people with a six shooter strapped to each hip nor are you going to eliminate street crime by the visible presence of a few heaters. My prediction is that most who hold a concealed handgun license will still carry concealed. Most folks will not encounter someone openly carrying a sidearm very often, if ever. When you do, smile, say howdy, and relax because the odds that person is going to do you harm is very, very slim. Criminals will never openly carry a holstered handgun as many of them are not leagally allowed to carry weapons and those that are don't want to call attention to themselves. Open carriers, just like their concealed carry breathren, are definitely the good guys (and gals).

  • dm 12/04/2008 6:04:00 PM

Ignorant trash recycled from Handgun Control Inc. You are not man enough to handle the responsibility of a weapon... we understand that. Now, leave us the heck alone.

  • Tacberry 12/04/2008 4:14:00 PM

Pat, I'd like you to meet Robert Hawkins. http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSN0564256720071206 Mr. Hawkins is an example of a bad guy. How about you focus your outrage on the crazy laws that make a legally armed person hesitate when they have to choose between shooting Mr. Hawkins and being sued by his family - or cowering with the rest of the sheep at the slaughter? Meet Brenden McKnown - he was an armed good guy who didn't shoot a mall shooter in Tacoma, WA. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/249444_shooting23.html You need to rethink the Fire Extinguisher vs. Gun analogy.

  • Ed Allen 12/04/2008 2:58:00 PM

You Mr. Williams have a serious disorder. Do you run and hide when you see a police officer with that **gasp** gun on his hip? It is a very serious disorder. Are you also in fear of someone in the parking lot running you over? Please go get help, never carry a weapon, and please turn in your driver's license and car so that you never go on the murderous rampage you expect from your fellow citizens.

  • Warsong 12/04/2008 10:51:00 AM

Ah, yes, I see...there are no Virginia Tech's where you come from, which is assuredly not on this planet. I'm sure that one of the things you would like to impress upon people is that only 45 States are Open Carry States, and, the majority of them have lower crime rates than Texas. Then again, we need to remember that "Law Abiding Citizens" commit no more Crimes with a Weapon on their side, or, even in their hand, than they do when the "Only Ones" and other Criminals (on both sides of the Badge) are the only ones Armed...or, did I miss a statistic somewhere. Can someone show me the statistics on Crimes committed by "Law Abiding Citizens" with, and without, a Gun on their hip? Please, also, provide the statistics on Criminal Assaults on Police Stations and Firing Ranges as well, preferably focusing on those committed by Law Abiding Citizens. In all cases, please diferenciate between Crimes committed by Criminals, and, Crimes committed by "Law Abiding Citizens." Please also explain why "Open Carry States" have lower rates of Crime than those where only Criminals carry weapons.

What a moron. I guess that Patrick likes to live with his head in the sand, or somewhere else dark. I would "be strapped" at the grocery store, just no one would see it. The current law subjects me to criminal prosecution should my jacket blow open, or other reason that my firearm should be seen. You can thank me for the low crime rate, because the would be mugger doesn't know you from me on the street, and you can be an easy mark if you want, its your life.

  • E. Zach Lee-Wright 12/04/2008 3:17:00 AM

In the 1960s the nation steered towards greater and greater gun restrictions, usually in response to a presidential assassination attempt by a man (oddly attempts by women were not taken very seriously). Then Florida began the wave of concealed carry permits. The Chicago and New York mayors refuse to consider the good that has come from this. They have no intellectual honesty. Their perception is that guns do bad. Guns are bad. If you need a gun, call the police and one will be sent to you at some point in the future. For about 20 minutes. These mayors refuse to trust their citizens to protect themselves and refuse to respect their right to do so. These two mayors claim their urban centers are no place for private gun ownership but the ignore the good that has benefited Miami. "Gun Free Zones" not backed up with tight security (such as courthouses) are worst than a joke. They create a population of known victims. Those who can't fight back. As noble as the thought, the practical application is bass ackwards. Campus concealed carry is a good and necessary thing. The best examples are Virginia Tech and Columbine compared with the school shooter in Pearl, MS. The Pearl shooter was stopped by an assistant principal armed with a Colt .45, who never fired a shot. Open carry? It is not my thing but it is odd that Texas of all places would have a problem with it when you can walk coast to coast with a six gun on you hip and nobody will say a word about it. The good thing is it allows a way for legal carry while someone is getting a concealed carry permit. It takes a long time to get the permit and some women don't like to be followed home from the grocery store knowing they have victim on their foreheads.

  • George Lyon 12/04/2008 3:00:00 AM

Heaven help you if you ever get car-jacked with your child in the car and you have no way to defend yourself. This column says more about your ignorance than anything else. Bad things happen. Don't be prepared for them and your dead.

  • Lthrnck 12/04/2008 2:53:00 AM

Well it sure makes sense to me. Why would we all not want to go back to the 1870's... geesh if the writer of this completely bias, oneside opionion would have even done the slightest bit of research he might have discovered this: 1. The Wild West is in Hollywood, CA. 2. The Old West actually had a lower per capitia violent crime rate then we do now. 3. Anti Gun people like this author, have been predicting Gloom and Doom whenever a state talked about allowing any type of looser gun control. Guess what IT NEVER HAPPENS. You also noticed he wants us to just give up our RIGHT to defend our selfs and leave it to the Police. Who by the way have no legal obligation to protect the individualcitizens. Guns are not the problem, if Anti Gun people would put just have the effort and all the money they spend trying to get rid of a tool, into the Mental Health and Social issues of the world today, then the majority of crime would go down. We pro gun, or more realistic Pro Defense people have been telling you that for years. But no, you only operate on EMOTION AND FEAR. You can't see that all the laws in the world that you have gotten passed HAVN'T WORKED AT ALL. Adding more isn't going to help. FIX THE MENTAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS.... Then you will see a dramatic drop in crime. UNITL LEAVE ME ALONE.. I will protect myself and my family. I would rather live with the fact that I had to pull my gun and take the life of someone trying to take mine or one of my family. Then live with the fact that I was able and capable to defend myself or my family, but wasn't prepared to do so because I let some WHINING, SNIVELING, SPINLESS person, who has no self confidence in themselfs to protect what they love, take my means of self-defense away, by crying to some politician. If you don't want to carry a gun, THEN PLEASE DON'T, but leave those of us who have courage to defend others alone. You whine and cry, you keep saying after every shooting... Oh that can't happen here, we are a quite community... But yet it does. Until someone developes a pill that will get rid of all the hate in this WORLD, then there will be a need for people to defend their lives and the lives of those around them. If you don't want to be one of those defenders.. fine... let the rest of us alone, so we can do the job .. you can't.

  • Chet Szymecki 12/04/2008 2:26:00 AM

Interesting read but the author fails to admit that the same folks carrying open on occasion most likely are the same ones that carry concealed now - no problems with them. Good men that carry guns are similar to fellas like 52 year old Mark Wilson of Tyler, Texas. Mark sacrificed his own life and saved countless others when he confronted a violent felon outside the Smith County Courthouse. On a hot summer day here in Virginia (not as hot as TX!) for years we have had thousands of men from every corner of the state enjoying the comfort of open carry - it simply is not an issue. Good guys with guns are...well, good guys with guns.

  • Notso 12/04/2008 2:19:00 AM

It's because for some reason, Texans are idiots and can't be trusted with firearms. I'm glad I live in Arizona where the law abiding citizens are much smarter and have the right to be armed if they so desire.

  • Duane Suddeth 12/04/2008 12:38:00 AM

Well, it's not too difficult to see where the author resides on guns. What I would like him to ask is why hasn't the other 44 states that have open carry experienced the incidents that he says will suddenly pop up in Texas if this is passed?
