Besides being home to kickass BBQ, hot summer weather, and the best team in the NBA, North Texas is home to some classic cinematic history. Starting this weekend, the Alamo Drafthouse, along with Texas Monthly, will be sparking up their yearly Rolling Roadshow series here in DFW. The premise is simple: the good people at the Drafthouse will be showing outdoor screenings of notable films shot in the very town the films are screened. On Friday, the Rolling Roadshow will make its way to Fort Worth, where they'll screen the John Wayne classic, Red River, the 1948 best picture nominee filmed right in the midst of Cowtown. Two days later, screening 1983's Tender Mercies (starring Robert Duvall and Fort Worth native Betty Buckley) at the Ellis County Courthouse. Three screenings follow Waxahachie, with stops in Marfa (No Country for Old Men and Giant), and Archer City (The Last Picture Show) to follow. All Rolling Roadshow screenings are absolutely free and open to the public, which makes for a pretty doggone cheap date night and a great reason for a road trip. For the full screening lineup and more information on the Rolling Roadshow, check out drafthouse.com/texasfilms.
